Bears are cute, but also incredibly strong, unpredictable, and will rely exclusively on instinct in an uncertain situation. Please use extreme caution. Do not engage. Call local authorities.

Now that we’ve gotten the officially unofficial disclaimer out of the way, I want to share this cool video from one of Collier County’s local sheriff deputies. After responding to a local call regarding a bear and her cub in Ave Maria, the deputy showed up onsite to discover the cub was trapped inside the dumpster.

We can assume he was looking for food scraps, but soon found out escaping was easier said than done. Enter Deputy Richard Jacobs. Serving Collier County since 2016, Deputy Jacobs identified that the cub needed help. After seeing the mama bear was a safe distance away, you can see he dropped a wood pallet inside the dumpster to provide a ladder like climbing tool. After a minute, the baby cub was able to safely escape and run back towards mama.

We thank Collier County Sheriff’s office for their quick and calm action keeping both citizens and our natural wildlife safe. What a cool video.
